The story is set in New York City and revolves around a 17 year old gang leader Ash Lynx and 19 year old Japanese student Eji Okumura. The two meet under a certain circumstance and are thrust into a partnership then to a romantic relationship. The series is one of the earlier boys’ love manga that both women and men can really get into; it’s full of action, crime and drama on top of the romance between it’s two mains. Author and creator, Akimi Yoshida, has been praised for her portrayal of a gay relationship between two men while not fetishising nor overtly displaying Ash and Eji’s relationship. Banana Fish is set to air in July of 2018. Staff include, Free! Iwatobi Swim Club‘s Hiroko Itsumi as director, Fruits Basket‘s Akemi Hayashi as character designer and Mob Psycho 100‘s Hiroshi Seko as script supervisor. Studio Mappa, the studio behind the famous Yuri!!! on Ice anime, took on the project of adapting the classic series into a modern style anime series. With a production team like this, I have a feeling that Banana Fish will not only be faithfully adapted, but will bring a new life to the romance genre. You can keep up to date on the series’ news and announcements by checking their twitter and official website.
